The London Marathon is one of the iconic marathon runs in the world. First run in 1981, it is now one of the World Marathon Majors. It is traditionally held in April.
Some 48,000 people take on the 26-mile course in various guises, making it one of the largest mass runs in the UK behind the Great North Run.
London Marathon Course
The marathon is in the heart of the UK capital, criss-crossing its way across the Thames before coming to a conclusion along the Mall by Buckingham Palace. It is a relatively flat course.
London Marathon 2023 Results
Kelvin Kiptum won the London Marathon 2023 in a record time of 2 hours 2 minute and 25 seconds. Sifan Hassan won the women’s event.
British athlete and broadcaster Paula Radcliffe still holds the record for the women’s race at 2 hours 5 minutes and 25 seconds set in 2013.
However, the run is much more than a competitive event, with people all over the world coming to run, many of them in fancy dress. People from all over London come to support the runners – after all how often do you get to see a giraffe running over Tower Bridge?

The 2024 event will be run on 21 April.
London Marathon Ballot
There are several ways to enter the London Marathon including with a charity which has a guaranteed number of entries. However, you do need to guarantee raising a certain amount of sponsorship for your chosen charity. Alternatively you can enter the London Marathon ballot. Details of which can be found here.
How Much Does It Cost to Enter?
The cost is £69.99 for runners from the UK entrants or £146 for international competitors which includes a £20 carbon offset levy. (2024 prices).
