In The Offing: Mark Leckey
October 7, 2023 - January 14, 2024
An exhibition by Mark Leckey entitled In the Offing will run at Turner Contemporary Margate, an-hour-and-a-half south of London from 7 October, 2023 to 14 January, 2024.
In the Offing is a group exhibition which sees Leckey taking on the role of editor of a magazine inviting 11 blossoming artists and musicians to interpret the title of the exhibition. This refers to the 18th century nautical term for a distant sea which is viewable on the horizon – evoking feelings of foreboding and anticipation.
The immersive exhibition of audio and visual works has been choreographed by Leckey to create both the sense of a gallery and a fairground. The exhibition which includes a new video by the artist is inspired by the seaside town of Margate which hosts the Turner Contemporary, and especially Dreamland, its amusement park. The exhibition also explores the socio-political mature of the UK’s coastal towns, and concludes a yearlong project by the artist.
The Turner-award winning artist was born in 1964. His video and art works draw largely on nostalgia and especially pop culture. In 2008 he won the Turner Prize for Industrial Light and Magic. In the Offing continues the artist’s exploration of popular culture as well as technology.
