Impressionists on Paper: Degas to Toulouse-Lautrec will be on display at the Royal Academy from 25 November to 10 March 2024.

The exhibition will explore how the way artists worked with paper was transformed by both Impressionist and Post-Impressionist artists in the second half of the 19th century in France. This was in this period that drawings and watercolours were viewed as more than just preparations for the final work of art, becoming autonomous pieces in their own right.

Impressionists on Paper will feature approximately 80 pieces by artists such as Degas, Cézanne, Renoir, Gauguin, Seurat, Toulouse-Lautrec and van Gogh.

The exhibition opens with early Impressionism (1860s and 1870s), including Degas’ Woman at a Window. It continues with the 1880s, including van Gogh’s The Fortifications of Paris with Houses, and Monet’s Cliffs at Etretat: The Needle Rock and Porte d’Aval, concluding with the 1890s and 1900s, with Degas’ Dancers on a Bench, some of Cézanne’s watercolours and works by Toulouse-Lautrec.

It is supported by Gide Loyrette Nouel and the Huo Family Foundation, as well as Kathryn Uhde.
