James Clark checks out YOTEL London Shoreditch in the heart of one of the capital’s liveliest neighbourhoods.

Just over a year ago, I visited YOTEL London in Clerkenwell and was amazed that not only had the group managed to open a brand new and modern, stylish and inexpensive hotel at a time when the streets of London seemed all but abandoned, but they’d managed to do it very well.

I had a very enjoyable stay and gave YOTEL London the thumbs up while thinking to myself that would be it from YOTEL for a while. How wrong could I be? 14 months later, I was standing outside the door of YOTEL London Shoreditch in the former East London Hotel.

I took the tube to Bethnal Green and could see the bright neon light of YOTEL in the distance. The site of it was a blessed relief because I was carrying a vast amount of luggage as I was flying to Canada from Heathrow the following morning.

I was greeted warmly on arrival in the very stylish looking hotel by a young woman who happily checked me in and told me everything that I may need to know for a comfortable night’s stay. My key card was activated, and I was happily heading towards the lift. If only every meet and greet could be that pleasant.

The Rooms at YOTEL London Shoreditch

The YOTEL London Shoreditch in Bethnal Green has 161 bedrooms for business and leisure travellers. As expected, the room was spotlessly clean or was it a cabin? Either way I liked the light and airy space that was influenced by discreet and changeable lighting and a window overlooking the lively streets below.

The top of the range British made mattresses was extremely comfortable and made getting to sleep pleasantly effortless, the 43-inch flatscreen television was a nice touch, although I didn’t turn it on, and the excellent shower and bathroom facilities could hold their heads high alongside much more expensive types of accommodation.

I was greeted enthusiastically as I ventured down for breakfast the following morning. I enjoyed a nice strong americano and breakfast burrito filled with bacon and egg (a vegetarian version was also available), as I laughed and joked with the team member before heading back out on to the early morning streets with the sun on my face, and excitement for the day ahead.

James’ Verdict

Small and efficient accommodation at a very reasonable price. If it’s all about location, then the YOTEL London Shoreditch wins easily. It feels like you’re in the middle of everything. This is a nice addition to an already impressive collection. Last year I would never have dreamed that a second London based YOTEL was on the cards. I wonder if I’ll be back in 2023? At this stage, I’m not going to rule anything out.
