The Last Temptation of Christ - credit BFI National Archive

From March to June, the BFI Southbank will have a series of retrospectives as well as a programme of Italian Neorealism. The retrospectives will be on Gene Tierney, Victor Erice and Lindsay Anderson.

This retrospective at the BFI will focus on the work of the hidden actress, including screenings of LAURA (Otto Preminger, 1944) and LEAVE HER TO HEAVEN (John M. Stahl, 1945).

OF TIME AND LIGHT: THE FILMS OF VÍCTOR ERICE

25 March – 30 April

This series of features and short films coincides with the release of Erice’s new film Close Your Eyes which will be shown at the BFI Southbank from 12 April. Films shown in the series include : THE SPIRIT OF THE BEEHIVE (1973), EL SUR (1983) and THE QUINCE TREE SUN (1992). It will also include short films which have rarely been seen in the UK.

O DREAMLAND! LINDSAY ANDERSON’S DARK BRITISH CINEMA
2 to 30 May

May will see a seasonal dedicated to director Lindsay Anderson, including shorts and documentaries and TV work as well as films by this most satirical of directors, including the amazing IF…. (1968), O LUCKY MAN! (1973) and BRITANNIA HOSPITAL (1982) series starring Malcolm McDowell.

CHASING THE REAL: ITALIAN NEOREALISM

Alberto Lattuada’s THE BANDIT (1946)

This series of films is in association with Cinecittà and features 20 films from Vittorio De Sica’s BICYCLE THIEVES (1948) to Luchino Visconti’s OSSESSIONE (1943). Other works include Roberto Rossellini’s ROME and OPEN CITY (1945).

BIG SCREEN CLASSICS

There will also be daily screenings of classic films including : THE LAST TEMPTATION OF CHRIST (Martin Scorsese, 1988) (main image), NOSFERATU (FW Murnau, 1922) and WOMEN IN LOVE (Ken Russell, 1970) in April; and BEAUTIFUL THING (Hettie Macdonald, 1996), CABARET (Bob Fosse, 1972), HIS GIRL FRIDAY (Howard Hawks, 1940) and A STREETCAR NAMED DESIRE (Elia Kazan, 1951).
