Southbank Centre Winter Festival
November 3, 2022 - January 8, 2023
London’s Southbank winter festival returns to the UK capital on 3 November, running through to the New Year. The Southbank Centre Winter Festival is a highlight of the winter season in London and includes plenty of free events.
Part of the great features of this London festival is that you can enjoy it while taking a London Southbank walk beside the Thames. On the way you will pass pop-up bars, twinkling markets and free shows, as well as great outdoor artworks and fun for all the family.
Drink and eat at the Winter Market that runs from 3 November until Boxing Day. Make sure to warm up with some mulled wine.
Try some curling at The Curling Club pop-up. Or if that sounds to active them why not toast some marshmallows at Jimmy’s.
Winter Festival Shows and Art
This year you can transport yourself to Tennessee for Dolly Parton’s Smoky Mountain Christmas Carol (8 December to 8 January), or join the kids for Hey Duggee: The Live Theatre Show.
While outdoors there is an winter light exhibition, indoors at the Hayward Gallery is Strange Clay: Ceramics in Contemporary Art (26 October to 8 January) and the free, Ai Weiwei-curated Koestler Arts: Freedom (27 October to 18 December).
Alternatively, catch one of the many concerts in the Southbank Centre including a performance of Handel’s Messiah on 4 December, or join in a Christmas Carol Singalong on 10 December.
Sparkling New Year’s Eve
The Royal Festival Hall is the best place to see the UK’s largest annual fireworks display with five floors of music from the 20s to the current day.
Although some of the above events are ticketed and charged for, many are free, including DJs, art sessions, and even a not so festive Caribbean carnival.
