A Play for the Living in a Time of Extinction by Miranda Rose Hall will have its UK debut at the Barbican Theatre in April thanks to a collaboration between Katie Mitchell, Headlong and the Barbican.

This ground-breaking performance, a daring eco-theatre venture, is totally powered by bicycles and offers a model for how we may tour theatre responsibly during a climate crisis.

The Concept

In a daring experiment in environmental theatre, Katie Mitchell and Moi Tran have developed Miranda Rose Hall’s darkly humorous, life-affirming production with Headlong, touring company.

Naomi is a member of a theatre group that has written a piece specifically for those of you experiencing extinction, but the players haven’t yet appeared. In the meanwhile, Naomi has a strategy.

This one-woman performance leads us on a transformative journey to face the urgent ecological catastrophe that is taking on all around us. This passionately feminist performance is a compelling investigation of being  human in this period of man-made extinction. It is equal parts ritual and war cry, and it is totally powered by bicycles.

Headlong has introduced a cutting-edge touring model with assistance from Théâtre Vidy-Lausanne and Jérôme Bel. The cast and crew do not travel with the performance. The voyage, the first of its type in the UK, starts at the Barbican.

Local teams will individually adapt the show’s blueprint in each location as part of a risky zero-travel tour. It is a component of an innovative multinational project that reimagines theatre in the context of the climate catastrophe.

Mitchell, a well-known artist across the world, has created six works that address climate change. The convergence of feminism and eco-activism is a topic of which both the director and writer are artistically and socially conscious.

A Play for the Living in a Time of Extinction

Will be performed at the Barbican Theatre from 26 to 29 April 2023. Running time is 1 hour 20 minutes.
